My Journey in Nursing and the Impact of FIFO MEDICAL ESSENTIALS course in my career progression

When I first started thinking about my journey into R&R nursing, I was eager to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, but I also knew it would require a lot of hard work, dedication, extra clinical skills, and the right support. Finding the right educational path was crucial to take me to the starting line, as my lack of confidence was my biggest hurdle to overcome. That’s when I discovered the FIFO Medical Essentials course. The practical components, practical scenarios, hands-on activities, and structure of these courses have been a game-changer for me.

The FIFO Medical Essentials was exactly what I needed to take on R&R nursing in a more structured, manageable way. The combination of practical learning, hands-on experience, and theoretical knowledge made me feel well-prepared for the challenges of working in remote areas. Whether it was managing the challenges of isolated settings or handling the stresses of hospital and PHC settings, the training I received equipped me with the tools and confidence to excel.

One of the standout elements of my experience was the incredible support I received from Barry, Paul, and Libby. They did not give up on me. Their dedication and encouragement went far beyond what I expected. Paul’s deep understanding of the Resource (mining) environment, combined with his patient guidance, helped me navigate even the toughest challenges. Libby, with her compassionate approach, made me feel truly supported, offering invaluable insights and Barry always making time for any questions or concerns I had and making sure I was able to take part of all scenarios and practical activities, even when I was ‘out of my depth’ and ready to given up . Their unwavering commitment to my success not only helped me excel in my studies but also inspired me to be the best nurse I could be.

Thanks to the knowledge and skills gained through the FIFO Medical Essentials, I was able to secure my first rural placement in a small town in Tasmania—a fantastic opportunity that helped me further develop my clinical skills while embracing the unique challenges of working in a rural setting. Now, I’m excited to be heading off to Western Australia for my next job adventure, where I’ll continue to work in a remote area, applying everything I’ve learned and growing even more as a R&R nurse.

Looking back, I can confidently say that these courses, paired with the exceptional mentorship from Barry, Paul and Libby, not only prepared me for the demands of R&R nursing but also ignited a passion for this unique area of healthcare. I’ve gained expertise, formed lasting professional connections, and grown both personally and professionally. The journey has been challenging but incredibly rewarding, and I’m proud to be a student who can stand as an example of what the FIFO Medical Essentials can offer.
